The Power of She: A Permanent Collection Exhibition
My work is included in this great exhibit... It’s the year 2020, and the Franklin G. Burroughs - Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum is celebrating women and all of their accomplishments, particularly in the arts. The Power of She is an exhibition of nearly 40 works of art from the Museum’s permanent collection featuring work created by, thematically representative of, and/or commemorating women, femininity and girl power. Both visually stunning and technically impressive, this body of work is a wonderful way to experience the beauty and power of the collective “SHE.”

Hand in Hand exhibit
A special exhibition through Kirsten Muenster Projects presents works from leading national and international artists working in wood, paper, and metal. Each of these artists shares a love of the natural world and their materials - pieces are hand carved, cut, bent, raised, chased, formed, sandblasted, burned, weathered, rusted, patinated, and painted.

Intimate creative dialogue develops between artists and their material over the years. It's a partnership, working hand in hand, the resulting pieces are in essence a conversation between the two, human-made and nature-made.

Artists include David Barnhill, Todd Hoyer, David Huang, Richard Kennedy, Jennifer Falck Linssen, Alain Mailland, Pascal Oudet, Norm Sartorious, Betty Scarpino, Hayley Smith, Hans Weissflog.

Gallery Exhibition
I've been invited to participate in Tea Collaborative - Connecting Cultures, an exhibit at the Mary C. Daly RSM Art Gallery at Mercy By The Sea Retreat & Conference Center in Madison, CT. The aim of this collaborative exhibition organized by Ann Grasso is to foster cultural awareness and discussion of the similarities we share as humans. The work I submitted, Karesansui 1, is a moku hanga (Japanese woodblock) print, handcarved and printed with mineral pigments. Karesansui are the dry gravel gardens of Japan. These gardens include linear patterns of raked gravel representing water. It is the peaceful quality of these gardens that has always linked them in my mind to the care and joy of taking tea, whether with friends or for contemplative reflection.

Gallery Exhibition
I've been invited to be a part of Blue/Green: color/code/context, an exhibit this spring at browngrotta arts in Wilton, CT. Artists were asked to provide work that explores these colors, literally or symbolically. The colors evoke a myriad of connotations. There was ground for those interested in exploring color as a mood, a musical genre, naivete, fertility, greed, rebirth or an affinity for nature. My sculpture "Channel" presses for a connection to nature. It represents an unbroken chain of quality, natural habitat channeling birds along their migratory route. This group exhibition of artists from 15 different countries participating in Blue/Green: color/code/context interprets these colors and what they symbolize in vastly different ways... as paintings, sculpture and tapestry. A catalog will be available.

Art Center Exhibition

I feel very honored to be included as one of three U.S. artists in the exhibition, Contemporary Art Influenced by Korea & Japan: An Unexpected Approach. From the press release: "This major international exhibition presents over 60 works by 23 artists from Japan, Korea, and the United States. The artists in this exhibit have a close relationship to a traditional, culturally associated craft aesthetic, manifested in a contemporary manner. They have chosen conventionally Asian materials and/or techniques (dyes, papers, gold leaf, persimmon tannin, katagami) used in both time-honored and unconventional ways. For example...Jennifer Linssen's innovative sculptures of katagami." Hosted by the Greenwich Arts Council, the exhibit is at the Bendheim Gallery in Greenwich, CT, and it is curated by browngrotta arts, Wilton, CT. More of the press release may be read here:

A new hanging work will be exhibited at the Republic Plaza this Fall in the exhibit, Haiku - Poetry in Art in Denver, Colorado. The Republic Plaza has grand airy spaces that accentuate the delicacy of Izumi. Izumi is Japanese for spring or fountain. This hanging sculpture is formed of many handcarved paper and metal "droplets" each suspended in action, each poised to fill the stillness and quench a dry, parched land. Like the Japanese wind chime bells - furin - meant to signal any breath of wind in the quiet heat of summer, Izumi's droplets catch light and cast droplets of shadow across walls and floor portending visionary rain. Republic Plaza is located at 370 17th Street along the 16th Street walking mall, Mon-Fri 8 AM - 6 PM, Saturday 9 AM - 2 PM. For more information, please visit artsbrookfield.com. Curated by Jane Guthridge and Andra Archer.

Some places and people are truly special. When these two come together and coalesce to form an organization dedicated to learning and helping others, lives are touched. One such special organization is the guild. Guilds come in all shapes and sizes and are often dedicated to furthering art and skill. When I first moved to Colorado in 1999, I was blessed to become a part of the Handweaver's Guild of Boulder. For those of you who don't already know, I love textiles. I was trained at an early age in classical art: drawing, painting, and sculpture, but midway through college, I had a life changing event and discovered textiles. I switched my degree from drawing and painting to textile design with a specialty in jacquard and pattern design. Needless to say, my life since then continues to combine fine art and textile techniques. The guild in Boulder is large and filled with creative people who bring in nationally recognized speakers on all the fine crafts related to textiles. It was there that I first met John Marshall, my mentor in traditional katazome. And it was also with their help in the form of a scholarship that I first went to Japan. This coming winter, I've been invited to send work for their The Art of Fiber... Fifty Years of the Handweavers Guild of Boulder exhibition at The Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder, Colorado. Many artists and craftspeople have been blessed by this substantial guild. I know that I am one of them.

I've been invited to take part in a fascinating exhibit, Forming: The Synergy Between Basketry and Sculpture this summer and autumn at the Alden B. Dow Museum of the Midland Center for the Arts in Midland, MI. As the curator notes, "A selection of artists from across America inquisitively open our eyes to new alternatives in basketry and fiber-based sculptural form. The craftsmanship is superb, the creativity and technical finesse is complex, while the vision is beyond today, infused with inspiration from long revered fiber traditions." On view at the same time will be three additional exhibits, which I can personally say I can't wait to see... Modern Twist: Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Art, Poetry in Print: Japanese Woodblock Prints from the Saginaw Art Museum, and Forging A New Japan: Japanese Woodblock Prints from the Sheldon and Heather Siegel Collection.

Undone - on wall
"Undone"
Thoughts on "Undone"... Much of my recent work, the Reveal Series, deals with life's potential. It nestles itself comfortably between the worlds of cultural and written language, using codes, symbols, and forms to express humanity's promise and capacity. As I approached the Considering the Kylix exhibition, I studied the cultural symbols and patterns of the ancient kylix and examined the customary use of this vessel. Traditionally used in ceremonies celebrating Dionysus, this drinking cup brought to mind ideas of excess and disorder. I considered how a good thing like celebration and wine could be overdone. And how one step down a path could, for some, be their undoing. Undone began its construction as a standard oval kylix form. Here, though, conceptually a walk down the path of excess and addiction leads to a dark place. The strip design of a Greek kylix is deconstructed. The rope carving - a traditional kylix pattern - is subverted here to symbolize how easily life's potential can unravel. The formal bands unwind. Together, the rope pattern and banding take on the appearance of a road spiraling out of control. In ancient times, the black of the traditional kylix was balanced by the warm tones of iron oxide. In Undone, the startling black and somber gray tones convey the serious gravity of the situation. It is a life unraveled - a life undone.

NYC Gallery Exhibition
For the next two months, cross-cultural, multi-genre, magical and/or visionary objects will be on display in Contained Excitement: Pleasures of the Void at the Cavin-Morris Gallery, 210 Eleventh Avenue, Suite 201, between 24th and 25th, New York, NY. The show focuses on the way artists control the sensual expectations of space in an object. The object is more than an attractive shape; it transgresses against expectations. The void is never really empty; it may contain mysterious objects or be the Mystery itself. In this observation is a secret of the soul of sensuality itself; the strategic withholding or timing of information in order to charge something with energy. Revelation is the artist's slave. Undergirding Contained Excitement: Pleasures of the Void is a fascination with the nexus points of Art and Design when craft is the tool of process that submits to more conceptual ideas. browngrotta arts has partnered with Cavin-Morris for Contained Excitement.
